Never be too emotionally invested/attached in your job….

As per Amy Wrzesniewski, there are in total three different categories of workers everywhere; those who see their work as a job, a career or a calling. If you see your job as a calling, you’re motivated by a sense of purpose and mission (as opposed to financial rewards) and you’re inclined to see your life and work as linked inextricably. Sounds fine so far but feelings ‘called’ to your job is, as shell puts it, a double-edged sword. It can be noticed easily that 9 out of 10 workers would sacrifice some of their lifetime earnings if they could find greater meaning at work. A meaningful job is something most of us aspire to have. Throwing yourself completely into work can pay off but many CEOs and professors say there’s a hidden danger in feeling too attached to your job.

Always keep in mind 2 things while working.

Never see work as a calling — 1st and foremost reason for this is if you feel called to your work, you might even be more vulnerable to exploitation from managers because they sense you’ll do anything to stay in this role. So, in case this is the case with you, never show this to your manager. Keep in mind that one day, you might not be doing your current job anymore, If you believe you were put on this earth to fill some ‘calling’ and for whatever reason you do not do it, you might easily consider that a moral failure, which is going to hurt you your entire life and you won’t be able to make anything out of it in case this happens. One former bassoon player who had been hit by a car began reading and teaching writing and the world started opening a lot. She started explaining the ideas she had and found interesting things to say. Another practical reason why callings can be harmful is the sheer fact that one day you might lose your job.

Find your passion but not let that passion alone drive you— sometimes finding new passions or new outlets for your longtime passion, can be beneficial. Let’s take examples of some professional dancers and musicians who had to stop work because of illness or injury, you will notice that artists who felt most passionate about their former careers were the least likely to bounce back. On the other hand, some of the less passionate artists found ways to channel their dedication to music or dance in other ways and things paid off.

your job is: your CEO for a point in time and it should not define you, what you’re doing is just helping drive a vessel, one day you’ll get off it and hopefully, it does better after you’re gone.
